Who is our September Spotlight?

Dr. Joann Henry

Why we are shining light on this Soror?

henrySoror Joann Henry is dedicated to the education of Richmond’s high school students.

In 2010, Joann created Dream Academy Richmond for students who were failing and turned off by the traditional school setting.  She used an approved curriculum from the Virginia Department of Education that is tailored for adults to obtain a high school diploma rather than a GED.  This has caused many adults to understand that they can realize their dreams by completing the requirements to get a high school diploma.  Soror Henry often times worked without a salary, using her own money to fund the operation.

Dr. Henry has been the Cooperative Office Education Coordinator, and Department Chair for Richmond Public Schools for 12 years. She has also been an assistant principal on the high school level and an adjunct associate professor at Virginia State University.

Dr. Henry obtained a Bachelor Degree in Business Education at Virginia State University, her  Masters in Business Education and Administration Supervision, and a  Doctoral Degree from Nova Southeastern University in Education Leadership.  She is also an award recipient of the 2013 Allen and Allen Hometown Heroes award.

Soror Henry was Initiated in 2006 with the Richmond Alumnae Chapter and is celebrating her 10th anniversary as a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
