The Honorable Angela Edwards Roberts

Why we are shining light on this Soror?



Judge Angela Roberts is a pioneer in the field of Law.  She was the FIRST elected African American female judge in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  She recently served as a Judge of the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, Oliver Hill Courts Building, in Richmond, Virginia, since March 1990.

Prior to her election she was the Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Richmond, the Budget Analyst for the Virginia Department of Planning and Budget, and Bar Counsel for the Virginia State Bar.

She has served as her court’s judicial liaison for the Annie E. Casey Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative and the Juvenile Justice Collaborative which focuses on keeping youth in school and out of court. 

Although Judge Roberts  retired, on July 29, 2016 she said she will not put her black robe away for good.  “This is not the end,” she said. “I plan to take six months off to relax. And then I expect to sit in as a substitute judge.”

Judge Roberts earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from Virginia Tech and her Law Degree from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.
